Denise Cordivano (Mrs. C)

Owner and Head of School since 1996.  I earned my degree from Adams State University in Colorado and am certified in both Elementary and Secondary Education.  I substituted with students in kindergarten through 12th grade.  In 1985, I moved to Pennsylvania and accepted a position as a pre-kindergarten teacher.  I fell in love with the preschool age and decided my true calling was to work with very young children and their families.  As the years passed, I also had the opportunity to teach kindergarten and be the early childhood director at two preschools.

In 1996, I was blessed with the opportunity to invest in the future of Battery Park City by becoming a co-owner of the Nursery.   I travel to PA where my husband, step-son, and two granddaughters live.

New York is a very comfortable place to be transplanted to.  The diversity of family backgrounds, the community spirit, the caring staff and each child’s unique personality make this Nursery a very special place.  I’m proud of the accomplishments the Nursery has made over the years and value the continued support of Judy, Karleen and our wonderful teachers.

Karleen Marcone

Director of Education hired October, 2015

After graduating from the University of Minnesota with a BA in Theatre Arts and a minor in Child Psychology, I relocated to NYC where my first job was an Assistant Teacher at BPC Day Nursery. It was here that my passion for early childhood was born and continued to blossom for over ten years. During this time, I honed my craft as an educator and became the Pre-Kindergarten Lead Teacher at the Nursery. I returned to school where I graduated from Touro College with a Master’s Degree in Special Education and became a Head Teacher with a CPSE Preschool.

It is my fervent belief that the most memorable learning comes when a student is able to make an emotional, visceral connection to what is being learned. As the old teacher adage says, “One must first light the fire before you can fill the cup”. I have found no greater tool for lighting that spark than the arts! Now that I have returned to the school where my love for early childhood education was first sparked, it is my great joy to s hare what I have learned along the way as well as to be ever inspired by everything the wonderful families and staff members of our school community  have to offer!

Judy Sklover

Administrative Director and Parent Liaison, hired September, 2003.  I am the mother of two fabulous children who are both alumna of the BPC Day Nursery. My daughter is now a Sophomore at Tulane University and my son is a 10th grader at Baruch College Campus H.S. I have a B.S. in Textile Marketing from the University of Rhode Island.  My background was in the apparel industry where I worked full time for many years.  After my company did some downsizing it was time to be creative in my approach to work.

I love working at the Nursery and am taking some Early Education Courses.  One day soon, I would like to go back to school for Early Education Administration.  When I am not working at the Nursery, I can be found at PS 89 where I am the After-school Head for Kindergarten & First Grade as well as a cooking teacher, at home trying to organize my life, or out in our amazing neighborhood.  I love to read, relax at the beach and play board games whenever I have the chance, but best of all I love spending time with my family. I consider it a privilege to see your children grow and develop and am thrilled to be a part of this wonderful Nursery.
